Time!

Posted in Uncategorized on October 2, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..The student had been waiting for several day’s.  Sitting outside, cold, wet and hungry.  Tired as he was though he continued to wait to show his discipline, respect and desire to train in the martial ways.  Seeing this the teacher determined that he would make a fit student.  However, in the back of his mind he thought, “only time will tell.”  Training was rigorous, very physically, mentally and spiritually draining.  The student said to the teacher one day, “how long will it take to become an expert?”  The instructor thought about this and replied.  You will be there soon enough.  The student still wanted to press the issue so he said, “if I train twice as hard can I get there faster?”  The instructor said no you will probably take twice as long.  Baffled at this the student caught himself and said,  “If I train two or three times as smart will I get there faster?”  At this the instructor laughed and said,  “you need to wait, be patient and let everything seep in.”  You need time!

…..When looking at this version of this particular story it is simple to understand what we all need on our martial journey.  We need of course the discipline, respect, desire, courage, etc. but we also need someone to show us the way and ultimately we need time.  Time to learn, grow, change and also most importantly time to let everything seep in.

Inspiration And Elevation!

Posted in Uncategorized on September 30, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..I personally encourage all of the practitioner’s of Instinctive Response Training to read a lot of material regarding the martial sciences.  This definitely includes reading some of the classics’s of this genre.  A couple quickly come to mind that are must reads.  However, I encourage everyone to read multiple translations in order to get a good feel for them.

Go Rin No Sho or The Book Of Five Rings by Miyamoto Mushashi

The Art Of War by Sun Tzu

…..These books are simply masterpieces of philosophy, strategy and tactics for use that is applicable even in our times.  If you read them closely you will enjoy and expand your mind which will hopefully in the end grant you inspiration and elevation!

A favorite saying of mine from The Art Of War is:

…..To win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the …..highest skill.

…..To subdue the enemy without fighting is the highest skill.

…..Sun Tzu

There are of course so many more but take that one and think about it and ponder what it could mean to you.

Grappling Intensive!

Posted in Uncategorized on September 29, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Well yesterday we had our Grappling Intensive class featuring how to Dominate and Control the Back!  We went through the basic positions ie. hooks out, hooks in, body triangle, opponent turtled, opponent flat on belly.  We worked a number of different ways to break down someone who has turtled on you.  Eventually we moved into how to take the back from various positions ie. guard, mount, crossbody, etc.  Then we moved into some Submissions and how to vary up the submissions by placing the movement in a different order.  Eventually we moved into how to defend the back and reverse position.  When teaching I try to point out the little details.  It is simply amazing what a foot here or creating a little space there will do or when you can and cannot cross your ankles.  These little details really separate someone who knows what they are doing compared to someone who just has an understanding.  One of my instructors used to say to me, “Brian it is all in the little details.”  This is simply a very true statement.

Grappling Intensive Day!

Posted in Uncategorized on September 28, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Okay today we will be working on Dominating and Controlling someone from the Back position.  Little details and skill sets will be addressed that will hopefully give every paricipant the opportunity to finalize in the moment when they do get position on someones back.  Looks to be fun and a definite learning experience.

Balance In Training!

Posted in Uncategorized on September 27, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Through out the years I have known quite a few martial practitioner’s.  Almost all martial sciences pursue a path of improvement along the physical, mental and spiritual lines.  This is essential because when you are balanced you can and simply will be a fantastic practitioner.  Quite often though you will find some great physical practitioners or specimens but they lack in the mental or spiritual areas or you might find the overtly orieneted mental and spiritual practitioner who has neglected the physical side.  We consistently need to ensure that we are training in all the areas.  In other words we need balance.  The absolute finest practitioner’s that I have met have at some point in their training brought a balance of the physical, mental and spiritual side of the martial sciences together.  These practitioner’s are just scary in what they are able to accomplish with their training.  Take time to train the physical side and really get after it and your body will improve and grow but do not also forget to work the mental side and learn and understand more about the martial sciences and life in general.  Finally nurture your unique spirit and set yourself on a path of spiritual growth.  Do this and bring everything together and you will be in balance!  Good luck!

Irish Stick Fighting!

Posted in Uncategorized on September 26, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..In recent years we have seen a resurgence of interest in European martial arts.  The following videos depict a Doyle family stick system called Rince an Bhata Uisce Bheatha.  This is shot at the Bua Fighting Faction in Canada.  These were beginner classes but give you an idea of his family system.

Enjoy.

Training Halls And Uniforms!

Posted in Uncategorized on September 25, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Okay so last night we were outside doing some bayonet, three foot stick and some knife training.  We had taken the training to a local, out of the way park.  Meaning that we were in a secluded spot getting some serious martial practice in.  At one point when it started to become a little darker I looked up and saw the stars and thought to myself how great it is that the entire world is your Training Hall.  Personally I believe that you should train wherever you find yourself.  Whether you are in a secluded outdoor area, in a padded Training Hall, (dojo, dojang, kwoon, whatever name you want to put to it) roof top, or a parking lot, pool, river, lake, mountain, etc.  It does not matter where you are at you should be able to find a place to get some excellent training in.  I have always believed that the entire world provides you with unlimited unique training areas and that we should all take advantage of them.  The World is your Training Hall!

…..In many instances I believe the same of training uniforms.  You need to experience multiple training uniforms so that you are never surprised in how you move or feel in them.  For sheer durability it is hard to be the standard heavy weight martial arts uniform or GI.  They are designed to take abuse and each one when well made will give you multiple years of use.  However, you also need to train in other clothing such as shorts and t-shirt, athletic wear, jogging suits, suit and tie, jeans, military fatigues or BDU’s. (battle dress uniform)  Along with clothing you need to train in a variety of foot wear.  Dress shoes, tennis shoes, flip flops, boots, military boots, for the ladies high heels, etc.  I have a good friend is a very, very strong proponent of wearing shoes while training.  I am all for this too and yet I also believe that you need to train in bare feet as well.  Why is this so?  Well I sleep and walk around my house with no shoes on so if someone were to break in then I will probably be facing them with no shoes on.  When I made that point to my friend he also realized that hey I need to train in my bare feet as well.  He too walks around his house with out shoes on. :)

…..We live on a great planet with lots of training opportunities.  Take advantage of all the different places you could train as well as the attire that you can also train in.
