Stretching!

Posted in Uncategorized on November 26, 2009 by Brian VanCise

…..Personally I stretch every day, though some days are lighter than other ones.  As I have gotten older I have taken steps to protect my knees during stretching.   One of the things I do is very rarely do I continue to do full splits and particularly I do not drop down into a full split.  I have noticed that when stretching and doing full splits the strain on my knees bothers me.  So I have taken corrective measures to protect them and yet still maintain flexibility.  One stretch in place of full splits is to be on your knees and do a modified cat stretch of in other words to push your knees as far apart as possible and them slightly lean forward.  This gives great pressure and yet protects at least my knees very well.  I also do a lot of static stretching or slowly moving into a stretch and holding it.  When I was younger in training we used to do ballistic stretching or bouncing into a movement and while this does tend to produce some great results at my age it simply is to much of a risk or tearing or pulling a muscle.  The point of this blog post is that you have to modify your stretching routine so that it fits your personal body and that you get results and not injuries.  Everyone will be a little different and what works great for me may not work great for you.  Yet always stretch with and eye for not being injured!

Vacation Training!

Posted in Uncategorized on November 23, 2009 by Brian VanCise

…..So whenever I am on vacation I always try to give my body some time to rest and recover.  That usually means I will stretch, lift kettle bells and participate in swimming, volleyball, mountain climbing, etc.  So basically I try to stay physically active and yet my body have a break from the hard training that martial practice brings.  During vacation I also try to get in some teaching or light martial training in a specific area.  This time I have a couple of people who found out I was traveling and are in the general area so they set up some private lessons.   I also brought my iaito so I have been working on my drawing techniques every morning.  When you get away allow your body to do some thing different and work some different muscles as well as pick an area to concentrate on that will still allow you to rest and recuperate.  See you all soon!

Understanding Your Weaknesses!

Posted in Uncategorized on November 19, 2009 by Brian VanCise

…..As a martial practitioner it is very important that you recognize your weaknesses and then try to correct them.  To often people try to improve areas that they are strong in and neglect areas that they do not enjoy or are weak at.  Consequently this leaves a practitioner very, very vulnerable in certain areas.  The best approach is to recognize where you are weak or in need or improvement and then take measures to correct and improve!

Petty Squables!

Posted in Uncategorized on November 16, 2009 by Brian VanCise

…..Folks life is simply to short to have petty squabbles with anyone.  Granted we may not get along with everyone.  That is just realistic!  However, when you encounter a problem see if you can fix it and if you can then that is perfect.  If it is difficult try again.  However if you cannot fix it then move on and continue on with your life in a positive manner.  All to often I see people having issues with someone over some thing that is really silly.  This generally causes them grief or makes them unhappy.  Instead try to make things right and if you cannot then move on in a positive manner.  What do I mean by positive manner?  Well if you have to move on then do so physically, mentally and spiritually.  Meaning literally move beyond the issue and do not dwell, think or allow it to bother you.  Do not talk down or belittle the other person just  move on!  Simple and yet difficult!  However rewarding in all regards if you do this!
