Practical Awareness And Avoidance!

…..So how many of you actually pay attention to people, animals, etc. that are in your general vicinity?  When you walk to the car are you constantly checking and looking in the immediate vicinity?  Do you note every person in a store or restaurant?  If you do not then these may be steps you might want to consider in your overall awareness.  These are just some simple ones as there are of course quite a few more things to notice and be aware of.  Regularly when teaching a seminar on self-defense I ask people if they are aware of their surroundings.  Resoundingly people will say yes.  However, if I ask them to go further and describe someone or some thing in the immediate vicinity invariably they cannot unless they look at that person/item.  Knowing who and what is around you should be a top priority in your practical personal protection skills.  Next after that is how to avoid situations.  Simply put I know a number of young guy’s and if they want to avoid violence in general it is pretty easy.  Do not go to the bar and or hang around with a bunch of drunk people who you do not know.  That bit of advice will drastically reduce your likelihood to be in a violent encounter.  However, for a young man that is pretty hard as the ladies are generally in those areas.  Another way to avoid potential violence is simply to use common sense.  In other words do not walk down dark alley’s go to your car all alone at night, carry lots of money and let everyone around you know, etc.  If you know someone has a propensity for violence stay away from them.  Oh and most importantly if some thing does not feel right, well it probably is not!  So if your gut is a twitching or the hair on the back of your neck is standing up well guess what your base instincts are telling you some thing!  Be practical, be conscientious and use your common sense!

See You On The Mats!
