A Healthy Dose Of Pressure Testing!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 28, 2009 by Brian VanCise

…..Okay let’s face it we train in a martial system!  That means we need to have a mentality that we can go through our opponent and take care of business.  This mentality is essential and is something you find in the top level martial practitioner’s around the world.  Simply, they have a mind set of taking care of business!  So in order to get this strong mental skill set you need to train consistently.  This constant training going over repetitive technique is essential.  If you look at any martial system out there they will have technique training and this technique training is essential in building the structure or fundamental skills of the system.  Whether it is Brazilian Jiujitsu, Judo, Wrestling, Kickboxing or Muay Thai, Silat, Filipino Martial Arts, Tae Kwon Do, etc.  They all have technique training to build the fundamental skill sets.  Once you have fundamental skill sets though you need to have some pressure testing to create that never say die mental attitude.  Now it does not have to be all the time but you certainly need it.  So you need to have some pressure testing.  In Instinctive Response Training when pressure testing we do everything full contact.  Empty Hand Sparring, Weapon Sparring (either padded or rattan), Grappling, etc.  Everything we do engenders contact to build that mental will and to create the instinctive response within our techniques!  Now we do not spar/roll every class but their is always a chance that you will be faced up against someone who will do their best to ring your bell or force you to submit with a choke/armbar, etc.  So you need to be ready.  Just like when you are out in the world if some thing happens you need to be ready!

Here are just a few clips of some full contact IRT action: (note some is light full contact and some is hard)  Enjoy!

Visualization!

The Instinctive Response Ebook CD Cover Picture for TIE

…..I do quite a bit of meditation both for relaxation as well as visualization.  Meditation has long been touted as an effective method for training.  This I can say is absolutely true.  World class athletes from every country use forms of visualization during their training and so should you! When visualizing I slowly break down technique and movement to see it clearly.  A long time ago when visualizing thing’s may have been more along the lines of outlines but now it is just like watching a TV screen.  When taking a technique and breaking it down I can see the movement and how I need to move and the eventual conclusion.   Of course you need to know the movement first to gain benefits from visualization but if you do and you practice this regularly you may be incredibly surprised with the benefits to your Martial Science training.  I had an instructor who would always say, “See, Feel, Do!” He was very adamant that you needed to train this way and I absolutely agree.  You need to see a technique, feel it done to you and then do it to someone else.  Only in this way can you actually learn efficiently.  Once you get the technique then you can break it down into the three areas.  You may have a practice with a partner where you feel it and also do it.  Or you may be teaching or demonstrating where you just do.  Finally if you meditate and visualize then you can see!  All three are essential and make sure that you do them all!

Nagging Injuries!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 23, 2009 by Brian VanCise

Back Hand

…..Right now I have some nagging injuries.  While in Tennessee I hyper extended my knee and this may have caused me to walk differently which inflamed and old achilles tendon injury.  So while I am still functional I need to be careful in my training and allow them to heal up.  Through out your Martial Science training you will have some injuries.  This really is unavoidable if you stick with it.  I have often felt it is what you do to improve when you have the injuries that separates us.  Our injuries must heal.  This is essential.  We must rest them and allow them to improve.  Yet if we are careful we can work around these injuries and still make improvements in other aspects.  I have witnessed people injured who sat in chairs to train, only participated in aspects that did not affect their injury and basically worked around an injured arm by only working the other side.  When I was practicing BJJ once my knee blew out.  Prognosis was to rest it and see if it would heal.  So I did rest it by not rolling for six months.  However, during those six months I worked on my technique with my training partners.  I made great progress and when the knee started feeling better then my game had actually improved.  Nagging injuries happen, however we can continue on by training differently.  Of course you should always consult your physician for their recommendations and follow them accordingly. That just makes common sense!  Needless to say my two current injuries will heal within time.  I just have to not over due them and I am certain they will be as good as new!

Commitment!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 22, 2009 by Brian VanCise

Website Angled Elbow Wild

…..When one decides to take up the martial path you will most assuredly be tested.  The biggest test will be your commitment to improving your martial skills.  Training in anything can be difficult because it takes up time and requires effort.  The Martial Sciences are no different in this respect.  Time and effort are essential in improving on your martial path.  You simply cannot become a better martial practitioner if you are not willing to give these precious commodities.  With all of the day to day things that come up with family, work, friend obligations, etc.  Time becomes a very valuable commodity! When I decided to study the Martial Sciences almost thirty years ago.  I made a conscious decision that I was going to stick with it.  That I always wanted to feel effective and have skills that might allow me to protect myself and those I loved. (plus I find it fun)  Throughout my training I have at times really had that commitment tested but I have always continued on.  My first instructor always used to say that the Martial Sciences are not easy but instead something really special if you are willing to train hard.  He was right in that these skill sets are extremely special but you have to train hard, be committed and never look back!
