Amateurs Vs. Professionals!

…..I cannot count or even know how many times I have seen this replayed over and over.  Where a serious martial practitioner and I mean really serious is challenged by an amateur or self taught person.  In general it plays out like the video below though yes an amateur does win every now and then.  When I say above, serious martial practitioner that is what I mean in that their are lots of people who practice the martial sciences but it may be more of a hobby than a serious calling.  However those serious practitioner’s well they really put every thing into it.  Some times to the point where their body is aching for a day off.  Anyways I came across this video of some amateur’s taking on a serious Brazilian Jiujitsu practitioner.  You can see the results!  Enjoy the beautiful movement and understand the serious training it took to get there.  Also if you find yourself in this position never underestimate your opponent!

The video is correct in that these guy’s were good sports.

I have seen more than my share where the guy’s were not good sports.

Repetitive Drills!

Posted in Uncategorized on April 29, 2009 by Brian VanCise

gt-brian-for-website1

…..One o f the great ways to burn in techniques to your memory is through repetitive drills.  One of the things I like most about the Filipino Martial Arts are the many and varied repetitive drills that do this.  Whether it is 3 Count, 4 Count, 6 Count, 10 Count and beyond or if you prefer to call it sumbrada or some thing else it really does not matter.  These free flowing repetitive movement drills really burn in the techniques to your memory so that you can perform them without thought!  Of course that is always the goal in that we wish to achieve The Instinctive Response!  Last night I probably burned in a thousand or more repetitions doing a couple of variations on blade drills with a student.  These repetitions and the thousands upon thousands that I have done before create body memory so that I just do not have to think but instead react.  That is the goal and repetitive drills help you achieve this!  So the next time you are doing a drill of any kind relish in the thought that you are creating a situation that if you ever need these techniques they will be there for you and you just will not have to think about it!

Butterfly Neck Crank!

…..The Butterfly Neck Crank is a pretty sweet one to have in your grappling arsenal.  It may not be the most efficient neck crank but it is a very interesting way to set up one.  On the following video clip Bas Rutten demonstrates it and well he is gregarious so he has renamed this as his own and calls it the Bas Rutten Neck Crank.  It still and always will be the Butterfly Neck Crank in my book but I enjoyed this video.

Enjoy!

IRT Neck Crank Intensive Results!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on April 27, 2009 by Brian VanCise

neck-crank-tie-7

…..Yesterday we had our IRT Neck Crank Intensive.  We covered quite a few different styles of neck cranks from standing ones to ones performed on the ground.  A neck crank is simply a devastating personal protection skill set.  One that really any martial practitioner should have in their personal system.  Anyways I thought I would share a few photos.

…..Remember in your training it is all about adding skill sets and then refining them.  Always practice under someone who has refined their skill sets so that you practice sound and with good technique as well as safely!  Neck cranks are inherently dangerous and need to be practiced under someone who has learned them properly.

IRT Neck Crank Intensive Is Today!

…..Okay we will be spending several hours working on neck cranks.  Neck cranks are a dynamic and dangerous method of applying pressure to the spine around the 4th and 5th cervical vertebrae.  They are a neck break and when done can have absolutely devastating consequences.  It is very, very important in my opinion to learn them from a qualified instructor and one that also teaches morality or good behavior.  When ever we practice neck cranks safety is absolutely first.  There is simply no need to do anything fast or in a herky jerky manner.  They are some thing that is needed in your martial training for that chance of a violent encounter that goes way south.

Capoeira!

…..Definitely a different type of martial system than what I practice but really fun to watch and I bet it is even more fun to get out there and move.  Capoeira is closer to martial dance but that does not make it ineffective as in the end it comes down to the practitioner.  Enjoy the video of this Maestro.

This instructor is blind.

Here is a lively capoeira match.

Women definitely enjoy the musical/dance side of capoeira.

Likes And Dislikes!

…..Okay I like just about every martial science that I come across. Yes I really do!  I can appreciate what people are trying to accomplish with their prescribed science.  Even when it differs greatly from what I do.  However, that does not mean that there may be some thing that I do not like or disagree with in their practice.  Still I would never ever tell them that.  That would be disrespectful and simply non productive.  It could also be the case that maybe I did not pick up some vital point and with that vital point of training explained maybe what is being done would make a lot of sense.  Like wise I do not expect everyone to get what I am doing all the time either.  This type of thing is to be expected. However in the end I do enjoy watching other peoples interpretation of their martial skill.  Just the beauty of movement whether it is simple or complex is enjoyable to watch!  So if you have the chance to see some one in action then do so by all means.  Watching a video clip on YouTube is cool but it certainly does not make up for seeing it in person!

…..Here is some old, old footage circa 1950’s or 1960’s in Hawaii.  This footage features Telesporo Subingsubing doing some double stick/blade and dumog.  It is very, very cool that some one put this up from their archives.  Thanks.

…..Hopefully we can all move so well and bend those knees when we are older!

Inspiration!

Posted in Uncategorized on April 20, 2009 by Brian VanCise

grand-tuhon-nene-for-tie

…..I find inspiration all over the place!  From watching young children practice martial science to adults.  From reading a book on the martial arts to watching a video of a practitioner doing their thing.  I also find inspiration from outside sources like some practitioners I know who have a band and are creating new music and bringing it to the world.  These varied sources of inspiration keep me going! Even when suffering from burn out which everyone does by the way I still find a way to train and continue on.  Last October was a very specific inspirational time in that we had “The Gathering” with lots of great instructors teaching.  Those teaching were myself, Brian “Buzz” Smith, Rich Parsons and of course the Grand Tuhon of Dekiti Tirsia Siradas Jersen “Nene” Tortal.  I am still inspired from that training and what everyone taught.  It was also a joy to see the Grand Tuhon who was seventy one years old at the time teach for two days and really work everyone out.  His stamina for martial training is intense!  I also get so much inspiration from other IRT practitioner’s when they are training.   Just the other day one of my regular private lesson students was training and watching and seeing him move and how far his skill sets have improved was definitely inspiring!  So when trying to keep motivated find things to inspire you and who knows where your training will go!
