Brutal, Efficient and Utilizing Surprise!

…..Okay we as people who want to learn effective and efficient personal protection skills need to also keep an eye on how predators like to attack their victims.  Simply put a predator who thinks things through usually will be brutal, efficient and utilize surprise to their advantage.  As a personal protection specialist my goal is to spot or feel out these predators when they are around and to neutralize them by avoidance, awareness and of course action if necessary.  Check out some of the following videos of predators in motion.

There is some bad language on a couple of videos.

Filipino Bolo Training! A Real World Edge!

…..Okay, everyone that knows me knows that I simply love the Filipino Martial Arts.  Whether it is Dekiti Tirsia Siradas, Pekiti Tirsia Kali, Modern Arnis, Inayan Escrima, Kali Illustrimo, Balintawak, Kuntaw, Kuntao, Inosanto Blend, etc.  I simply enjoy the economy of movement in the Filipino Arts and have for almost thirty years.  One of the things I have often admired about the Filipino systems is that they quickly and rapidly adapt with the modern times.  There really is no time loop with the Filipino systems where they keep things that do not work.  No, most Filipino martial systems are all about being effective and hey if some thing comes along that is working well then they will adopt it and make it part of what they do!  That is in the end what gives them an edge!  Since most of them deal with bladed weapons then that is a real world edge in combat!

…..Okay the following video demonstrates one Aikido technique.  The technique is Kyoku Nage.  Aikido has beautiful economy of motion and can be devastating when performed by a good practitioner.  The use or redirection of energy is always fun to watch in Aikido.

Here is the clip:

Here is an old video clip that has a variety of techniques:

Mileage!

…..Practice, practice, practice.  That was the message from yesterday’s post.  Going along with that you also need to pace yourself.  We each have a finite amount of mileage that we can put on our body and yet still be a brutally effective martial practitioner.  As I have gotten older things that I did in my youth while practicing I simply would not due today.  I simply do not recover as quickly.  So I practice not only religiously every day but I practice with a fine eye for good technique and I watch my mileage.  What does that mean?  Even though I may be working out incredibly hard and stressing my body I also have an eye to watch how far I go and to ensure that I do not do things that will damage my body during this training.  I want to ensure that I keep my training going, be able to go on and to watch the mileage.  This is important and I believe even more so as we get older.  A wise teacher once said to me, “Brian, train smart, train with an eye for perfection but also make sure you can continue training.”  That holds true to this day.  Watch your mileage, ensure that you can continue training and be in this for the long haul!

Practice, Practice And More Practice!

…..Well truthfully I just love to train.  Really I cannot get enough of it.  One of the most important things I personally need to do is ensure that I do not over train.  Every day I make sure I get some Martial Science training in.  Even on an incredibly busy day I may just do some visualization of technique but usually every day has a couple of hours devoted to my personal training on top of teaching other practitioners.  One thing I try to consistently encourage other practitioner’s to do is to train outside of class on their own.  This practice when performed correctly really allows a practitioner to grow and progress.  Of course the person training needs to pay attention to all of the small details so that they practice with an eye for perfection.  That will hopefully ensure good progress without negative details slipping in.  Bottom line when you are a martial practitioner you will need to practice these skills.  Practice, practice and more practice.  Simply you can never get enough if you are a serious martial practitioner!

A Variety Of Kuntaw, Kuntao Or Kuntao-Silat Video Clips!

Posted in Uncategorized on March 24, 2009 by Brian VanCise

…..Kuntaw or Kuntao are martial systems from the Philippines with a Chinese influence.  In some cases they have also been heavily influenced by Indonesian Silat as they made there way to the Philippines. (of course that depends on the system)  Some even come from Indonesia as well.  These systems have some really great unique movement with lots of leg destructions, empty hands and weapons.  I though I would post a number of videos from different systems so that you could get some contrast.

Kuntao Silat

Kuntao in New York City

Neo Tribe Kali

Kuntaw

Kuntao Dumpag

Kuntaw In The Phillipines

There are quite a variety of systems using this name and some times they do not quite look like one another.  Some have even modernized and look more like Karate or Tae Kwon Do.

…..Okay I am always interested in what other people are doing and what is new out there.  Of particular interest is what is going on in competitive submission grappling and what changes or modifications have people come up with.  Besides working out with some highly skilled Brazilian Jiujitsu friends and practicing with other IRT practitioner’s I also frequent a few sites to take a look at their training and techniques.  One of those sites is Submission 101.

Here is there Youtube site which has a ton of free information:

Practice In A Variety Of Gear!

Posted in Uncategorized on March 21, 2009 by Brian VanCise

tie-12

…..Okay if you look at the post from yesterday there are some excellent comments in how your clothing and equipment can change what you can do in the moment.  This is a very important point as what you wear can and will dictate what you can do.  A heavy coat with gloves and boots like in the photo above will change what you can do in the moment.  Like wise a police officer in their duty rig will have more limited movement then someone wearing just shorts, t-shirt and tennis shoes.  Further remember that at least one third of your day you are wearing almost nothing at all. (meaning when you are sleeping)  There is always a chance that you may have a home break in where you will be wearing little and probably most assuredly be in bare feet.  The point of this post is that you need to be able to move effectively irregardless of what you are wearing.  This also means that you need to be comfortable with everything that you wear and have the ability to protect yourself or your loved ones whether you are in shorts, bare foot, wearing a heavy winter coat, gloves and boots, etc.  We need to be adaptable not only to the environment or weather but also to the items and clothing that we are wearing.

Love the conversation guys and hopefully we all can grow from it!
