I Just Have No Time For It…….

…..Well in martial circles it is a dirty word.   Politics in the martial sciences is in many ways out of control.  To many groups, to much in fighting and attempting to control a very small pie.  It really is unfortunate when many Training Halls, Dojo’s, Dojang’s, etc. are all about business and well that is their bottom line.  When the martial sciences are all about a business then that is a problem.  It also inevitably leads into politics and who can attempt to control the piece of the pie in their area.  A long, long time ago I was very put off with this type of behavior.   When I would see instructors or practitioner’s in general worrying about everything from the business side to what they were going to do about their competitors.  So in IRT for many, many years I taught completely outside and had no over head.  It was absolutely fantastic!  When I opened up the main Training Hall here in Alma I did it in a way that the Training Hall literally pays for itself and the practitioner’s dues go toward equipment.  So you can imagine the great equipment that we have.  I do not see other local martial schools as competitors but instead allies in training people in the martial sciences and improving our area.   I have tried to expose practitioners to other systems of the martial sciences.  Even more so I have always continually brought in practitioner’s from all kinds of systems so that IRT practitioner’s will be exposed to as many people as possible.   My martial goals are to improve my skill sets regularly and those skill sets of the people practicing with me.  That is what in the end it is all about.  Not about how much money you can make or what some one else is doing.  No, no, no the martial sciences are a true gift to pass on to future generations.  Make an impact by making that your goal!

Winning Me Over: BenchMade Knives!

…..So a good friend dropped over the other day and we were chatting particularly about his line of work.  You see he is an LEO and deals every day with the part of society that you or I do not see all the time.  Anyways he has also been a long time IRT practitioner when the time permitted and we have worked extensively on his hand cuffing skills and control techniques.  He has used these techniques again and again with success and has had a few particularly stressful encounters where they have helped him out.  Well yesterday he brought me over to the dark side so to speak.  For the longest time I have not or would not buy a  folding knife made by BenchMade.  Now I have a dozen friends that swear by them and enjoy them immensely.  However, for some reason and maybe it was the first one I picked up they just did not do it for me.  Anyways my friend wanted to thank me for all the work we have done together to polish his skill sets.  So he bought me a BenchMade mini-griptilian.  Now this knife has won me over I might say in a big way.  It is beautiful and efficient and I do like the grip and of course the Axis Locking system.

Now this little knife is simply beautiful and it feels good in the hand.  One thing I do like about BenchMade knives is their unique Axis locking system.

In this video you can see how quickly you can use it to open or close:

In these following two videos you can see how the blades handles dirt in its mechanism.

Here is a comprehensive review that some one did:

Here is how the Axis Lock works:

Here is a BenchMade Video:

And another one:

And the final one:

…..Now I must say that I am thrilled with this griptilian and it will be a great EDC knife. (Every Day Carry)

Gift Of Traditional Martial Arts!

…..There is simply a lot to be said for training in the traditional martial arts.  Self Respect, Courtesy, Determination, Loyalty, etc.  In general the traditional arts help to cultivate and create a practitioner so that they grow and become a better person.  So recently it came to my attention of a new movie put out by Kyoshi Michael Coleman of the Genbukan.  Genbukan is a traditional organization headed by Soke Tanemura who resides and trains in Japan.  It has very old lineage from Japan’s feudal times and battlefield techniques from that period.  In the Genbukan they are very formal and traditional.  The movie Gift of Traditional Martial Arts was a good watch and I personally enjoyed watching it.  I think you would enjoy it as well.

Here is a promo clip:

You can order the DVD here: Gift of Traditional Martial Arts

I particularly liked the message of helping other people to grow and become better human being’s.  This resonates with me very well!  Even though I train and teach IRT which could be considered a modern art I am a traditionalist in many ways.

Combative Methods!

Posted in Uncategorized on February 20, 2009 by Brian VanCise

…..Okay this is truthfully one of the major reasons that we all train. We want skills that in a self defense, personal protection, military, etc. will let us prevail.  Combative methods are nothing new to man kind.   As a matter of fact you can bet that almost every tribe that has ever been around has taught their warriors (men or women) how to protect themselves.  These methods are essential skill sets for our survival back then and or course now.  When the combative methods that people teach are taken to heart they can be more than life changing and also become a way for personal growth beyond just the physical nature of the combative methods.  Strictly speaking there is quite a bit that we all have to learn and can pass on to those we trust and love.  Through out the course of my training and teaching I have been fortunate to survive violence and also in turn taught others how to survive and they have been successful.  This is turn has helped me to grow in many ways!  Combative methods or what ever you wish to call them are life changing skill sets!

I ache!

…..Okay I literally ache from my feet to my neck.  Lately I have been doing so much training on top of a really, busy teaching schedule that my body is having almost no time to recover.  My muscles are sore and certain areas with old wounds are really bothering me with intense pain and my feet are bleeding regularly from minor cuts. (yikes)  Truthfully it is all minor stuff and a day or two and I will be as good as new.  Still this is important to watch out for because it can be a sure sign of over training.  When my body gets like this I try to step back a bit and relax and get refreshed and invigorated and ready to get after this pursuit of the martial sciences that I have.  Right now my busy schedule does not allow for a break until some time around Saturday morning at noon.  So until then simply put…….. I ache!
