Flowing Movement!

…..Okay yesterday I was watching two practitioner’s roll.  What struck me nicely about their movement was the total relaxation and ability to change and flow with the movement.  They had flowing movement and the exchange was good and beneficial to both.  They easily transitioned from position to position from the mount to the guard to the half guard to the back to the mount to the guard to a guard pass and to the cross body, etc.,etc.  Since they were not looking for submissions but instead doing what we call positional rolling they had the opportunity to work on their exchange from position to position.  This Flowing Movement is important!  Really important.  Why?  Well when being swept or bumped and rolled you need to be already moving to a technique to reverse the position.  In other words if you can already be moving and flowing to a counter technique then you may be able to interrupt what the other person is doing and counter them in the half beat.  That is one of their vulnerable moments before they establish their position.  Being relaxed and having flowing movement will help you learn this style of movement.  If you are tense and trying to hard you may miss the transitional opportunities!

tie-1-kerambit-book

…..For Christmas I was also lucky to receive Steve Tarani’s book Karambit Exotic Weapon of the Indonesian Archipelago. This is a really nice book and one that I did not have in my martial library.  Mr. Tarani presents some history of the Karambit, strategy of its use and techniques are presented in a simple matter to understand.  All in all the book is a nice read with lots of valuable information and technique.  Much of Mr. Tarani’s skill set in the Indonesian arts is drawn from Pencak Silat Mande Muda and training with the late great Pendakar Herman Suwanda.  Who was simply a fantastic martial artist and I was fortunate to have trained with him quite a few times.  Maybe that is another reason why I enjoyed reading this book so much. :)

New Kerambit Folder!

Posted in Uncategorized on December 26, 2008 by Brian VanCise

website-angled-elbow2

…..Well I have a number of Kerambits that are fixed blades.  I have some from Indonesia and of course some from the Philippines.  I have a unique Indian blade that is a Kerambit just not called that in India. (I got this one from a coconut guy)  Well yesterday for Christmas I received a folding knife but a different kind of folding knife than I am used to.  It is the Smith and Wesson Extreme Ops Kerambit Folding knife. (or hawk bill)

You can find it at: KaliGear

or here at: Amazon

This is one beautiful and impressive folding knife.  It is heavy, durable and fits really well just like a Kerambit should.  While I would not use this for thrusting style attacks because of the inner line locking folding mechanism it is perfect for slashing techniques which are the forte of the Kerambit any way.  There are several different Kerambit folders out there but this one is priced really well and it still a finely made folding knife.  So if you need to get a Kerambit folder give this one a try.

We do love our outdoor training in IRT and some other systems enjoy it as well.  Systema is one of those other systems.

Systema is a Russian system of martial arts.  One branch of it is headed by Mikhail Ryabko and propogated in the west by Vladimir Vasiliev.  The following is a winter training video by one of their students.  Enjoy!

The Holidays Are Almost Here!

Posted in Uncategorized on December 22, 2008 by Brian VanCise

tie-16

…..Well the Holidays are almost here and we all know what that means.  Good friends and family around the house and plenty of food.  With that in mind I tend to get in quite a few work outs in over the holidays to help battle the bulge or keep some of that food from going Right to my waist line.  Usually on a Holiday morning I am up first thing and getting in a quick work out with lots of movement.  I follow that up with a workout later in the evening that may concentrate on some muscular development.   This year I will be using the kettle bells later in the day to help keep my holiday binge under control.  Believe it or not I am always teaching right around the holidays.  Practitioners in IRT generally have some time off around then and want to train and perfect their skill sets.  This also works well for me as I need the extra training/teaching myself during that period.  So if you wish to learn IRT around the holidays do not be shy as there is always some one willing to help you out!

Grappling With The Knife!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on December 21, 2008 by Brian VanCise

tie-32

…..Your on the ground with a knife and your opponent has one as well.  That creates some very dynamic and dangerous dimensions.  Why is that?  Well your mobility is more limited when you are on the ground and you are unable to move as quickly as if you were standing and on your feet.  So while position is still paramount to the grappling you have to do with a knife wielding adversary you now have to account for his blade all of the time.  This is simply challenging.  I was working with this the other day with one of IRT’s top practitioners and we were playing with the idea of manipulating control of the opponents tool bearing hand by grabbing, movement and positioning.  There are simply ways in doing this that are better depending on you and your opponents position.  All of this culminated in who could change the angle first as that person would be gaining the advantage and needed position for control.  We also looked at the concept of walking the body or using your body to pin control and negate an opponents limb.  This movement is particularly essential in grappling with an opponent that has a knife or any kind of tool.  If you can control a limb you have an extreme advantage and in general should have a major upper hand in the confrontation.

tie-14

…..Now I do not really want to be grappling with an opponent on the ground with a knife in their hand.  That is simply a difficult task to deal with and since your mobility is restricted you will have a harder time dodging a knife thrust or slash.  Certainly I would like to be standing up and mobile.  However, we do not always get to choose the battleground or whether we will be vertical or horizontal.  I have always tried to incorporate and plan for all contingencies.  Do this and you will keep your training interesting and exciting!
