Concealed Carry Options!

Posted in Uncategorized on August 30, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Okay so in the United States of America within many of the States you can apply and receive a Concealed Pistol License.  Sometimes they go by different names Concealed Weapons License or CCW or even a few different ones.  We also have reciprocity through many different States so you are able to legally carry in many of them.  Though you need to know and understand each individual states law.  Now when carrying you need to have a structure in how you carry and can conceal what you are carrying so that other people do not know it is there.  This is pretty easy with smaller caliber hand guns but when you get into larger sized hand guns like a Glock 40 cal. or 45 cal. then you start to run into some problems.  Now if you are a larger individual this still can be pretty easy but for you average sized person you need to have some strategies.  Personally I like inside the pant holsters or fanny pack holsters.  The inside the pants holster gives great concealment and yet it is available in a heart beat.  Fanny pack holsters offer the same and yet you can carry them easily and extra magazines and accoutrement’s as well.  I also use several on the hip holsters but only when wearing a coat.  Below are some concealed carry holsters:

Galco Large Fanny Pack Holster

Inside the Pant Holster

Hip Holster (note this is a cheap one as I prefer ones made out of leather with no strap)

…..The above options are pretty standard in that most people who carry concealed will have several options that they use depending on the type of clothing they are wearing.   Personally the inside the pant is my favorite style but the fanny pack is a close second as I have always worn fanny packs when wearing t-shirts and shorts.

Holiday Weekend!

Posted in Uncategorized on August 29, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Okay well in the United States we are on the last weekend of summer and it is a Holiday weekend so most people have at least three days off.  I typically look at a holiday weekend as a way to either rest a tired and weary body or if my body is feeling good then a weekend to make some martial gains.  Since my body does not have any aches this weekend I have chosen a few things to work on to improve my skill sets.  I will be spending some time working on take downs and throws plus bladed application and push dagger skill sets.  I have several private lessons so the take downs and throws will be trained there and as for the bladed and push dagger skills, those I will work on alone.  With the push dagger and blade skills one of the things I will be working on is penetration plus cutting and I have several methods I am going to employ but one is simply that I have an old, old heavy bag that has seen better days. (think of about eight years of sticks beating on it)  So I will be using that as well as going around my property and cutting branches with the ginunting, kris and presas style bolo.  So this should be an excellent weekend of working out and getting reinvigorated!

Martial Places To Train!

Posted in Uncategorized on August 28, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Above in the picture is a Budokan in Tokyo, Japan.  It is located in Ayase to be exact.  This particular Budokan has simply a great feel to it.  The first time I went there you could head Shakahachi music being played from a distance and when we arrived closer there was a good friend of Bart Uguccioni’s playing the Shakahachi.  At this Budokan which is a beautifully designed training place for the martial sciences you will find multiple training rooms/halls, an outdoor kyudo training facility, large gymnasium for Kendo and more.  No outdoor shoes are worn inside and you need to wear the slippers that are provided once you enter to move throughout the Budokan until you arrive at your training venue.  This truthfully is one of the advantages of being in a foreign country like Japan in that they have set aside time and resources for their martial systems.  Truthfully that is wonderful!

Ayase Budokan

…..What makes the Ayase Budokan even more special is that Hatsumi Sensei teaches there once a week!

1,000 cuts!

Posted in Uncategorized on August 27, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Okay so the other night I had some time on my hands and I also had my iaito with me.  Now my iaito is a nihongi iaito or it was made in Japan.  It is absolutely a beautiful work of art and the fittings are fit to the highest level.  This particular iaito also has a bo-hi or blood groove and because of that it sings when you cut.  So the other night I started from seiza (think kneeling with folded feet underneath) and proceeded into working my way through some downward cuts.  I try to remain completely relaxed and without tension when doing this and it is a joy to have the time to cut and cut and cut.  I easily moved through four hundred or so downward cuts just like this.  Letting the sword sing and letting my body relax and enjoy the moment.  I then moved to standing in Dai Jodan kamae (position) or upward, angled vertical position and proceeded to continue cutting while stepping forward.  I stopped counting after around six hundred or so cuts and just let my mind drift while continuing with the training.  This type of training in repetition is extremely important.  The more reps you can perform correctly the better your form will be and the more opportunity you will have to enter into the Instinctive Response.

Repetition Is Essential!

Knee’s and Elbow’s!

Posted in Uncategorized on August 25, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Okay so I was going through my bag work out last night and really getting into it.  The bag was shaking and moving as I was hitting it with palm heel strikes and roundhouse kicks.  Eventually I moved into working on horizontal, vertical and angled elbows and upward, angled and crescent knee strikes.  That is were it really got fun.  I spent about thirty minutes just working on the elbows and knees and well I was sweating allot afterwards.  Knee’s and elbow’s are extremely important self defense tools for any practitioner that is intent on having effective personal protection skills.  These tools (knee’s and elbow’s) are simply designed to deliver extreme amounts of damage in a close quarter situation.  Used properly against points of the body that are vulnerable and you will have a good chance of incapacitating an attacker.  Just a few days back a couple of IRT practitioner’s went at it full contact and one was incapacitated from an upward knee strike from the clinch. (thank goodness for head gear)  Now learning effective knee and elbow strikes is not hard.  You just need an instructor to show you how to strike and where to strike plus when to strike and then you need to practice with a partner and figure out when to strike in real time.  Also serious bag work that really gets into knee and elbow combinations will help you.  In IRT we do allot of knee and elbow work from the clinch, trapping hands and of course when grappling plus we will also throw them out there when just striking if we are close.  No doubt about it Knee’s and Elbow’s will round out your personal protection skills.  Make sure your skill sets are not lacking in this area!

From Stillness To Movement The Beauty Of Iaido!

Posted in Uncategorized on August 24, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..I love Iaido it really is a beautiful martial practice.  Through out the years I have studied a bit of several different lines of Iaido.  I thought that I would take the time to point on one Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido that I personally think is beautiful to watch.  This is one line of Iaido practiced and transferred by the late Yamaguchi Katsuo.

Here is the late great Yamaguchi Sensei in motion:

Iaido is an art form of extreme precision and Yamaguchi Katsuo exhibited extreme precision during this video clip.

If you are interested in practicing his line go to:

A Little Variation Here And There Goes A Long Way!

Posted in Uncategorized on August 23, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..The other day when getting in a workout with a friend of mine we were practicing a common technique that both of us know.  While practicing we continually reexamined the technique and each of us came up with some minute variations from other variations on the technique.  Now this was really a fun time as we both have been practicing for years and know this technique well but each found something new and special during that training session.  In your training a little variation can go a long, long way to keeping the practicing exciting.  Having been practicing the martial sciences for nearly thirty years consistently I am always amazed to find something totally new or a variation on a movement that catches my eye.  These variations inspire me to continuing training and pursing this passion that we all share.  I am fortunate to have friends in many systems who when in the area stop by and always make the time to train with me.  Some as a student/teacher relationship and others like this last one as good friends getting together and practiticing each others skill sets.  Variation of technique is also just one thing but each person is also radically different in how they move.  I move differently than almost all of my students and that is how it should be.  We all will move differently because we have different body types, mental strategies, mind sets, fears and of course different types of attributes.  Personally I love the variation that I see in IRT practitioners as I learn from everyone.  That is the goal in martial practice, learn, enjoy and have some variation!
