Blade Care And Maintenance!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 29, 2008 by Brian VanCise

……Okay the computer is back and I am in the process of reloading all of my material and programs on it for the last four years. :(   Still as they say the show must go on!

…..Blade care and maintenance.  For anyone that has a blade or handles someone else’s blades then you need to be careful and always remember that your fingers and skin leave marks that sometimes cannot be removed.  So in other words when handling a blade do not touch it with your fingers or skin and if you do then you need to clean it with a rag and then oil it very, very soon.

…..Looking at the above blade it is pretty simple to know where you should be placing your hand.  That is on the handle.  The brass portion will change color from skin contact but in general you can bring that back with some serious polishing.  However the blade portion really should not be touched and especially with your fingertips.  Yet if someone does touch a blade then they need to very shortly clean it with a damp rag and then get some oil on it with another rag or tissue.  This will keep the blade like new for a long time.  Personally when it comes to oil I like Japanese Choji oil as it is simply fantastic and also smells great.  However many other oils will suffice in a pinch and I have used quite a few varieties through out the years.

…..Truthfully the moral of this particular blog post is that if you handle a blade treat it with respect and take care of it so that it will last for a long, long time.  I am very fond of the different blades that I have and nothing upsets me more than when someone does not treat it with respect of care.  So when handling someone elses tools take time and be careful for they may be a treasure to that person.

Still Having Computer Issues……

Posted in Uncategorized on July 28, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Okay still having computer issues but I am up and running on a small lap top.  The main workhorse computer should be back in business later today or tomorrow. (I hope)

…..Now onto bigger and better things.  An often neglected portion of martial science training is the study of the Pressure Nerve Points on the human body.  These points when utilized correctly with the vital points of the human body can result in giving the practitioner an ability to zero in on specific areas and potentially stun someone or more.  PNP’s as we call them in IRT are points on the body that can cause motor dysfunction or a knockout and more.  Personally in IRT we train with the larger points that seem to have been proven over time to work regularly.  Regularly is the key here because unlike vital points PNP’s do not always work.  If the other person is hyped up on drugs, drunk or simply one of the points just does not work with them then you need to move on.  Pressure Nerve Points should be used in conjunction with vital point training and also with locks, throws, takedowns, etc.  When used in this manner I have found them very useful during arrest encounters in the past.  I can effectively say that I have seen or used several points on the legs to create a motor dysfunction during an arrest.  Having done that and then moved into a controlling lock we were successful.  IRT Pressure Nerve Point training can only be passed on through one on one direct contact with an instructor.  Having said that though I created a guide to help IRT practitioners and others interested in learning these PNP’s.  In 2008 I published an ebook titled: Pressure Nerve Points.  If you are a practitioner interested in Pressure Nerve Points then this is a very good ebook to start you on your way.

Pressure Nerve Points can be found here:

Unarmed Fighting Techniques Of The Samurai!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 23, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Okay recently I received Sensei’s latest book titled Unarmed Fighting Techniques Of The Samurai!  As usual the art work and artistic beauty of the book is unsurpassed among martial arts related books.  Sensei has continued to go all out in this regard and the beauty of the book is similar to Advanced Stick Fighting,he Way Of The Ninja, Japanese Sword Fighting:Secrets Of The Samurai, etc.  Now to the meat of the book.  This particular book has all of the kata from the nine ryu-ha of Budo Taijutsu.  However they are not catalogued in the book by pictures but instead words.  The book covers each kata in a few sentences.  So in that regard it is like the ultimate note book for the kata’s used in Budo Taijutsu.  With it all written out now there is no need to be a kata collector.  There are a few translation errors that happened according to the translators by the editor.  Still those are pretty easy to pick out by any Budo Taijutsu pracititioner.  Now to the important part of the book. The last four books written by Sensei have had lots of words of wisdom inside of them.  You see his approach to philosophy and can benefit greatly from his words of wisdom.  That is the true meat of the book and the last three books before it.  So read it and enjoy!

The book is available at Amazon and probably within weeks will be in every major book store.

Sometimes It Is Funny The Training You Come Across!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 22, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Yesterday I was at a local zoo that had just installed zip lines and also what they call the skywalk.  Now I have no fear of heights.  In the past this came in very handy in several jobs that I have worked.  My son though is still young and has a healthy respect and a little fear.  However, yesterday we did the sky walk together and enjoyed it immensely.  I particularly liked the single plank bridges where I could work balancing skills and breathing.  This type of training is the kind you find just by happenstance and it is very good.  It is similar to going for a hike in the mountains and the dynamics involved with the hike is a rigorous form of training that can only improve your body.  Training that is hidden is something that is enjoyable and keeps you young.  If you have children you know exactly what I mean and if you do not but have neices sometimes just play a game of tag with them and you will get some unique hidden forms of training.

MartialTalk & FMATalk Meet and Greet 2008 in Niagara Falls!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 21, 2008 by Brian VanCise

…..Well the falls were absolutely beautiful and the family had a good time in Niagara.  If you have not been there anytime soon then you really owe it to yourself to go and check out Niagara Falls. :)

Tom Quinn teaching Aikido at this years Meet and Greet!

…..Now for the really good martial stuff that this blog is all about.  The 2008 combined MartialTalk and FMATalk Meet and Greet was absolutely a lot of fun for me.  My only complaint is that I was unable to stay for a long time.  However, I really had a good time meeting everyone there and enjoyed the hospitality of Bob Hubbard and Tim Hartman.  Watching Tom Quinn move during his teaching segment was really cool and you can see that he has had many years of Aikido practice and teaching.  As for my segment I focused on IRT Blade Point work and I think that everyone had a good time. (I know I did :) )  This type of blade work is all about closing distance and using the point or countering and using the point though of course there is slashing and cutting involved as well.  Literally getting the point in and taking care of business is what it is all about.   Anyone who carries a blade should know legally what they can and cannot do in a lethal force encounter and also their local knife laws.  Keep that in mind before you ever carry one.   MartialTalk and FMATalk Meet and Greets are an excellent way to join and have camaraderie in the martial arts.  The Meet and Greets that I have taught at have been very enjoyable and meeting other practitioners with like minds and skill sets is a real treat.  If you can, make it out to a Meet and Greet in the future.
