What Is In Your Back Yard?

Posted in Uncategorized on June 30, 2008 by Brian VanCise

So what is right near you in your back yard?  I have traveled the world and had an opportunity to train with some of the very finest martial artists out there.  Some you can only train with if you go to them ie. Hatsumi Sensei.  Many others are available to train with near you as they travel and teach.  Such as my recent training experience in Dekiti Tirsia Siradas with Grand Tuhon Nene Tortal.  Though you can travel all the way to the Philippines to train with him as well.  Yet it may come to a shock to most that probably right in their back yard or immediate area within a radius of say fifty to a hundred miles are some very, very talented martial practitioners and teachers.  No one region of the world has a higher percentage of great martial practitioners to train with.  Though the system that they teach may vary georgraphically.  If you look around in your immediate area you may just be surprised at what you find.  You may find that world class martial practitioner and teacher right near you.  During my life I was blessed in having excellent teachers right in the towns that I lived in and ones that traveled and taught close enough to drive to easily.  Michigan and the midwest in general has always had a great number of tough as nails martial practitioners and instructors.  You may have had to look a bit to find them and seperate them from the average ones but in general this region has always been blessed.  Some of the absolute best I have trained with have been virtually unknown outside of their geographical area.  Maybe they just did not seek the lime light but their skills and teaching was first rate.  When pursuing your martial training look around and check out what is in your area and then see if it works for you.  Who knows you may come across that world class practitioner right in your back yard!

Functional, Efficient, Effective!

Posted in Uncategorized on June 27, 2008 by Brian VanCise

For me in the end this is what it is all about.  Functional, efficient and effective is what the martial sciences need to be.  While I enjoy history, stories and interesting technique in the end can I make it work in the moment is what I am asking myself.  So along my journey in the martial sciences I always try to keep my eye on the ball and when practicing anything always ask the question of is this functional, can I make it efficient and also effective.  Typically I will take a new skill set or technique and work my way through it questioning the functionality, efficiency and effectiveness.  The end goal of course is can I take that technique and keep it in line with FEE.  If I can then I will add it to what I do and Instinctive Response Training provided it fits within our unique framework.  The framework of IRT pretty much allows anything that is functional, efficient and effective.  So what makes something functional?  Well angles, distances, structure, body movement, footwork, etc. all will come into play but in the end your particular attributes and skill set will determine if you can make something functional.  Also what is functional for one person may not always work for another based on their unique characteristics.  This is just one more reason why people should not try to copy their instructors but in the end find their own unique movement and any good system promotes this.  Functionality happens when you can make it work.  Once you consistently do this during training you are on your way.   Once you get something through the functionality test then you need to constantly work it so that you can make your movement efficient and effective.  Just because a technique is functional does not mean that you will be efficient or effective with it.  Taking the movement and looking at how you can apply the principles and elements of the martial sciences in a multitude of variations will in the end help you in your ability to make it efficient and effective.  During this period you need to pay special attention to angles, lines, distance, timing, etc. and the more you do that the easier it will be to apply.  Effectiveness comes when you can apply what you are doing in the moment or under stress.  Only then will you have made it a part of yourself and taken your ability to that level.  Being effective comes through lots of painstaking training and finally pressure testing your training whether in scenario drills, sparring or yes in the moment.   Functional, efficient and effective are what we need to strive for in the martial sciences.  Always keep that at the top of your mind when training!

The Friends You Meet!

Posted in Uncategorized on June 25, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay one of the great things about training in the martial sciences is the people that you meet along the way.  Practitioners of the martial sciences in general get along very, very well.  Why, because we all have some serious things in common.  The desire and want to feel effective, the initiative to keep on training, no issues with sweating and working out, the desire to learn, practice and incorporate our training into our everyday lives and so much more.  Along this path that I have chosen or has chosen me.  I have met the greatest of friends and life long relationships that will continue until the end.  There is something about a bunch of guys and ladies working out with common goals and desires that really creates deep bonds.  In the martial sciences you come across absolutely fantastic people who will go to any length to help you out if needed.  True friends so to speak.  Following are some pictures from my personal photo library of some of the people I have met along the way.  I wish there were more but I only started taking pictures a few years ago.  Enjoy!

There are so many more but I will start with these on this post for now.  Alas I never took photos as a youth (think till about thirty five or so) so many great photo opportunities were missed.  That is a lesson for everyone.  Also the ones I did take that are non digital well some of the best suffered from water damage a long time ago.  So enjoy these!

Masking!

Posted in Uncategorized on June 24, 2008 by Brian VanCise

What is masking.  Well basically it is just one way to say hiding skill.  Sometimes during the course of your everyday life it will be important for you to not show what you know or that you move like someone that knows the martial sciences.  Why?  Well there could be many reasons.  Take for instance if you are around someone that if you show your true skill level then potentially something could happen or if you let someone know what you are and do then again they may want to test you.  Imagine if you were involved in some type of robbery with multiple victims.  Would you want to show your skill sets right away or wait for the most opportune time to act.  You would also want to be perceived as not a threat and should take appropriate actions so that the criminals would feel that you are less threatening.  We have all been around or know of some people that if the conversation goes to martial science training then it could turn in a way that they may try to goad us into doing something.   This is especially pertinent for younger martial science practitioners.  For myself I take my training very, very seriously and juvenile tactics like this are something I will have no part of.  So when someone does this then I am out of there or I tell them that I do not perform on command.  That worked quite well when I was younger.  Quite often when training with someone for the first time if it is not a student/practitioner type of training but instead a reciprocal type of training then I will mask a little skill and let the other person show what they know.  This then allows me to see what they do and concentrate on that rather than trying to concentrate on what I do.  You can learn allot about someone by doing this.  Sometimes you can see right into them.

Throughout the course of your life there will be times when it is prudent to mask your skill set and hide your martial science training.  Truthfully this is not very hard and with a little practice it can become very easy.  : )

Grand Tuhon Jerson “Nene” Tortal!

Posted in Uncategorized on June 23, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Well over the weekend in Chicago and the reason for the trip was to meet and learn from Grand Tuhon Jerson “Nene” Tortal of Dekiti Tirsia Siradas.   Saturday I had the opportunity to train with him at the Midway Kodenkan Martial Arts Academy and Healing Arts Center in Chicago.  The Grand Tuhon is a breath of fresh air.  Meaning he is very kind, nice, generous with his family art and a very inspiring teacher.  I can now see why Dekiti Tirsia Siradas is starting to spread like wild fire across the United States and the world.  It is a pleasure always to meet someone that is very, very good at what they do and yet interested in what other people are doing and also interested in imparting what they do in the right manner.  The Grand Tuhon of Dekiti Tirsia Siradas is just such a man.   Dekiti Tirsia Siradas of which I have had only a brief glimpse is definately a martial system with a unique delivery method and excellent footwork and movement.  I always look at the footwork first to see how a system moves and I was not disapointed at all with the beauty of movement of Dekiti Tirsia Siradas.   Grand Tuhon Tortal has been teaching in the Philippines both civialian, police and the military for a long time.  Real world skills and martial training is his forte!  I plan on having Grand Tuhon Tortal up to Michigan and the Alma area soon so that everyone in Michigan can experience this unique martial system.

Here are some videos of Grand Tuhon “Nene” Tortal in action from a previous seminar!

I would like to add that it was refreshing to see quality training knives on display from my good friend Bill Bednarick of www.combativecustoms.com!  Bill’s trainers were literally all over the place at the Kodenkan and you can even see one in the Grand Tuhons picture with me!

Sambo Russia’s Dynamic Martial System!

Posted in Uncategorized on June 19, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay Russia has quite a few great martial system but out of all of them Sambo is particularly my favorite.  This system has a lot of similarities with Judo, Brazilian Jiujitsu but still differences.  What is particularly special is just how good the practitioners of Sambo are at leg locks.  Following are some clips taken from last years Human Weapon Episode!  Enjoy.
