The Cane Seminar Is Today!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 31, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Today we have a seminar focused on The Cane!  We will be looking into how the cane has been used around the world for self defense.  From Japan, the Philippines, North and South America, Europe, Africa, etc.  We will utilize hooked canes, straight canes of varying lengths and explore striking with the cane, footwork, joint manipulation and finally get after it with some full contact cane fighting.  I will try to take some pictures of the training and update the Blog on Sunday.

Kali Gear!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 30, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay I buy a lot of Martial equipment.  I also have a number of dealers starting to send me their stuff to review on the blog and elsewhere at other forums.  Recently I made a couple of purchases from Leslie Buck’s Kali Gear.  One was an excellent stick bag that is the fighter model and another purchase where I received some training sticks, pasak or dulo dulo, (water buffalo palm stick) Kamagong Jungle Knife (made famous by Remy Presas) and a few other items.  So anyway my review on the equipment from Kali Gear is that their materials are outstanding and the service is even better.  I ordered on a Friday on Memorial day weekend and received the goods early Tuesday afternoon. (Monday was the holiday)  Now that is good, quick, service.  I was also impressed with the email notifications of when everything was shipped.  Kali Gear definitely has popped up on my radar as a Filipino equipment site to do business with in the future!

Check them out:  http://www.kaligear.com/catalog/index.php

Defanging The Snake!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 28, 2008 by Brian VanCise

A simple term thrown about in the FMA world but what does it mean?  Well it means to take the fangs out of the snake or defang it.  We as humans do not have fangs like a snake does but we do use tools that can bite ie. knife, sword, stick, etc.  So when you here defang the snake it means to take out the tool in the hand that is wielding it.  I spend allot of time practicing this type of movement, whether it be with sticks, long knifes, daggers, folding knifes, etc.  If in a moment of personal protection and someone is attacking me and they have a knife if I am able to take out that attacking hand and the tool that it is bearing the situation may turn in my favor.  That really is the goal in a self defense situation in that we wish to turn it in our favor so that we can survive.  Defanging the snake techniques are effective and efficient at this!

Okay very soon Hatsumi Sensei’s latest book: Unarmed Fighting Techniques Of The Samurai will be released!  This from all accounts will be a book showcasing the katas from all the currently taught schools of the Bujinkan.  Therefore as sensei has said, “no one will have to be a kata collector anymore.”  The book will be released mid June and you can pre-order the book now at amazon on this link:

Every couple of months someone asks me what would be the best DVDs or video’s to watch to get a feel of Budo Taijutsu.  I always recommend the following two as they have simply excellent video footage.  Kobudo No Kihon for sharing the Sanchin and Kihon techniques of Budo Taijutsu and What Is Martial Arts for pure creativity.  If you find yourself looking for some DVDs of Budo Taijutsu training then these are excellent!

Boxing The Sweet Science!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 26, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay I am a fan of boxing and have been since I was a little kid.  I can remember even watching boxing main events on TV. (that is how far I go back)  The sweet science has always been a very effective means of striking with your hands and consequentially it has been used for a long time by people to defend themselves.  Simple techniques like the Jab, Cross, Hook, Uppercut work very well and when delivered by someone that knows what they are doing well it can be devastating.  Below is a video of someone who used boxing to defend himself and his girlfriend.

Here is a montage of a boxer by the name of Manny PacQuiao:

You can see jabs, crosses, hook, uppercuts and movement in this video clip:

Now if you want to learn boxing properly then find a coach/teacher!

Cornerstone Lunging Techniques!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 25, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay one component of Instinctive Response Training is the Cornerstone Lunging Techniques.  These are big movements that can really rock an attacker in the moment.  Usually they come after you strike an attackers arm, leg and then you move in with your whole body for massive damage.  They can however be use immediately and offensively with no counter attack.  They are derived from the Sanshin No Kata of Budo Taijutsu but also have a Silat or FMA feel to them in the manner with which we practice them in IRT.  So much that they are uniquely IRT at this point.

Following is a video of a solo technique

The Middle Ground!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 23, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay no matter what you are doing whether you are being attacked with a knife, empty hands, stick or you are sparring, etc.  In any physical confrontation there will be three ranges of combat.  Long, Medium and Short to be exact.  Long range could be firing an assault rifle or it could be that you are ten to fifteen feet away from someone with a knife or handgun.  It could also be that you are just effectively outside of medium range which is when you are close enough to strike with very little movement.  Short range is when you are toe to toe or clinching, grappling etc.  They all provide unique dangers in that if someone is in long range against you and they have a projectile weapon you are in a lot of trouble if they are accurate with it.  Short range requires that you fire your striking tools, clinch or go to the ground.  The medium range is often a very, very dangerous place.  You can attack and they can attack and quite often whoever fires first has the advantage.  This could be good for you or it might not be.  The way I like to teach people to move is to work from long to short and then out again.  I personally am very comfortable in this manner in that at a longer range with my footwork and speed oriented attributes I can cover the distance faster than most into a short range and out again before people know what hit them.  In other words I often try to avoid the middle range or middle ground where whomever fires first may decide the outcome.  Instead I prefer to teach people to control the distance and dominate the long and short ranges.  This has proven very, very effective throughout the years.  Though each unique individual has to play to their attributes and strengths.  So if you do not have the speed to move from long to short range quickly then you may have to develop a skill set where you bring them into the middle range by defensive footwork and counter attack as they are moving in.  You  see you have to uniquely figure out how you move and what you can do.  Once you do that then you play to your strengths!  In the end it is up to you!

Balintawak!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 22, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay I have some friends that practice this system of Arnis and it is simply a very cool close in fighting stick style.  Founded a long time ago in the Philippines by Anciong Bacon this system has proven itself over and over again as being an effective martial system.  Michigan where I live has a strong group of Balintawak practitioners all trained by Manong Ted Buot.

The following videos may give you a feel for the different lineages of Balintawak!

Enjoy.

Always Research!
