Dan Inosanto A Living Legend!

Posted in Uncategorized on April 30, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay when I was a kid and interested in Martial Arts Bruce Lee was a big and I mean big icon of the martial sciences.  Naturally, when he died his inheritor Dan Inosanto continued on and became a guiding light in the Martial Arts.  For myself I met Dan at a seminar just before my 16th birthday oh so long ago at Michigan State University.  It was my third martial arts seminar at that point having already attended two seminar’s with Modern Arnis founder Remy Amador Presas.  It really was a joy to go to this seminar and train with Dan Inosanto and it inspired me so much that for the next several years I attended as many seminars with him as time possibly allowed.  Each one was filled to capacity with technique training and well you definitely came away scratching your head a bit. :)  Dan Inosanto certainly affected tons of martial artists throughout the United States and the world.  His continuing devotion to learning and improving is what I personally think about when I am contemplating those seminars and training times that I attended.  He is an example to us all to keep going and never stop but always continue to explore the martial sciences.  Following I have a few clips up here so that you can see Dan Inosanto in action.  Enjoy!

If you are able to go to California and train with Dan I would highly recommend it or if a seminar is near you then take that opportunity and train with him.

Finding The Right Path!

Posted in Uncategorized on April 29, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Throughout your life you will need to Find The Right Path in order to live and be happy.  It is no different than when you are in a violent encounter!  In a moment of violence you need to find a way to extricate yourself from it and find the right path away from the violence.  This could be running away, (always a good option), evading an aggressor, engaging and then escaping, controlling or more.  The point is that you need to find what works in the moment based upon that unique situation and in Instinctive Response Training we call this Finding The Right Path!

This skill set of Finding The Right Path opens up more and more with proper training.  Literally the more you train the easier it will be to find this path away or through a confrontation.  In a personal protection situation there are many things to think through but even before this there is overall awareness.  Being aware of your surroundings will help you to Find The Right Path.  Awareness helps in avoiding dangerous situations.  Together these two are more important than probably any physical skills you will ever learn so make sure that you practice your awareness and avoidance skills daily!  If action is necessary and you have been unable to avoid a life threatening situation then your training will be brought to the front and your life or your families life may be hanging on the edge of a precipice.  In a violent situation like this you will need to Find The Right Path that will bring you through it in one piece.  Each and every situation will be different so you will need to consistently train and throw out new variables and learn from them.  If you train well then hopefully in the moment you will Find The Right Path through it and survive!  That is all we can ask for!

One Of Michigan’s Best Kept Secrets!

Posted in Uncategorized on April 28, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Probably most people are not aware of it but Michigan is simply loaded with great Martial Artists and great Instructors.  From Modern Arnis to Kuntaw or Tae Kwon Do, Brazilian Jiujitsu, Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu and the list goes on.  We simply have some great practitioner’s and instructor’s.  However, some of them keep a low profile and run their training in a very low key manner befitting their personality.  A good friend of mine is just such an individual and he runs the Dexter Bujinkan Dojo.  Dexter Michigan is located just north and west of Ann Arbor and is a small but growing nice little town that reminds me of home.  Located just outside of the city is the Dexter Bujinkan Dojo which is run by Shidoshi Bart Uguccioni.  Bart has been around for a long time in the Bujinkan so long that many of his peers are now at the apex in terms of rank.  That is not really the path that Bart has chosen instead he is all about training and perfecting his own skills.  You can readily see it when you meet him and you can also see it in his students.  Further even more than all these years in the Bujinkan with numerous trips to Japan Bart has brought real world experience to the table in his teachings.  Having learned Shotokan Karate early on in some incredibly rough places and been a United State Marine.  Bart has been around the world and in some tight places.  Couple that with years and years of serious Budo Taijutsu training and you have an excellent practitioner and teacher.  All throughout Michigan we have some great best kept secrets in the martial arts.  Bart Uguccioni’s Dexter Bujinkan Dojo is just that!

The Training Team CPL Class Review!

Posted in Uncategorized on April 27, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay yesterday all day was spent with The Training Team going through the cpl/personal protection training national rifle association’s basic pistol safety and personal protection in the home.  This is a very good course and highlight’s many important details about concealed pistol license and personal protection in the home.

The course covers the following subjects:

Basic Pistol Safety
Developing Safe Shooting Skills
Strategies for Home and Personal Safety
Legal Aspects of Personal Protection
Selection of Firearms, Ammunition and Accessories

The Training Team course instructors did an excellent job in presenting the material and in a manner that was enjoyable and interesting.  Legal aspects were covered by a lawyer as per the course requirements and I am sure that everyone there came away with a new outlook on the responsibilities of gun ownership and also the responsibilities and legal aspects particularly pertaining to concealed carry in the state of Michigan.  I thoroughly enjoyed the range training and live fire drills however I definately enjoyed the laser sight training as well.  That was a nice bonus!

I would highly recommend anyone who is interested in firearm usage and safety to take their course.  They go beyond what they need to do in many ways by providing all of the firearms to shoot with and all the ammo and lots of food for breakfast and a lot more for lunch.  What more could you ask for in a cpl class that is reasonably priced?

The Training Team  can be found at: http://www.thetrainingteamcpl.com/index.php

They teach at Clare in Isabella county and also at Elm Hall in Gratiot county!

Tomorrow Is A Training Team Day!

Posted in Uncategorized on April 25, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Well tomorrow is going to be a long day working with The Training Team gaining a CPL license in the state of Michigan.  Myself, another IRT Practitioner and his wife will be going through the comprehensive Training Team CPL class and working our skill sets.  It actually has been a long time since I have taken a firearms class going way back to my day’s going through the police academy.  Even though I have kept my skills up by going to the range monthly and well yes I have had a little private instruction on some specific skills by some tactical firearm experts.  Still this will be the first group class in quite a long time that I have taken.  Group firearm training is always interesting because of all the unusual dynamics and also the varied skill sets that are brought from the different people involved.  I can remember going through the academy like yesterday and some individuals were simply fantastic shots and needed really no training.  There were however other LEO academy students who had never picked up a firearm which was very, very surprising but still just a typical group dynamic.  I can imagine that tomorrow will be little different in that some people have never shot or shot once or twice while others have shot their entire life.  Needless to say it will be a fun day with I am sure interesting information.  One thing they will be covering is the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home.  This is a nice little interesting book that I feel everyone interested in personal protection should take a look at and read.  The course overview looks good and I am really interested in getting this training rolling.  All in all it will be a great time!

You can view The Training Teams website here: http://www.thetrainingteamcpl.com/index.php

Firearms training is simply a must have in this day and age.  It is the preminent tool to use for personal protection.  Therefore we all need to get some training and head to the range every now and then and keep our skills up!

See You At The Range!

Sometimes People Make A Mistake!

Posted in Uncategorized on April 24, 2008 by Brian VanCise

You know sometimes people make a mistake and try to fit someone or what they do into a certain group.  With Instinctive Response Training this can be very, very difficult.  We are a unique system, something different and bound by nothing.  A worldly combative martial science to be exact!

Quite often someone tries to pidgeon hole what we do into a category like Arnis, Eskrima, Kali or Brazilian Jiujitsu or Budo Taijutsu, etc.  This really would not be accurate.  We have our own delivery system and movement that is unique unto itself.  It is in very many ways similar to other systems (because in the end all good movement is similar) and yet their are differences.

Instinctive Response Training is a worldy martial system.  No limits are placed on the practitioner and no restrictions either.  If someone comes with a background in wrestling, brazilian jiujitsu, mma, budo taijutsu, arnis, erkrima, kali, boxing, Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, Fencing, etc. they bring a unique flavor of movement that can fit with what we do.  Sure the initial stage of training can be hard but in the end the framework will open up and they will be able to explore in all areas such as: Tools/Weapons, Kicking, Hand Strikes, Trapping Hands and Joint Manipulations and finally Grappling.  Once the angles and footwork are mastered then everything fits together and the practitioner can explore!

All IRT practitioners need to explore and grow!  There are many ways to do this by training with different IRT instructors, attending seminars on other systems or training in another system.  Bottom line though is that you must keep growing and exploring in this worldly martial system!  Martial Science is endless so think of the world as your oyster and explore what it has to offer!  Only then do you really know what you have!

IRT Stick And Blade Footage From The Recent MartialTalk Southern Meet And Greet!

Posted in Uncategorized on April 22, 2008 by Brian VanCise
Here is a small cut from the recent MartialTalk Southern Meet and Greet where Instinctive Response Training and Kempo were featured. This teaching segment focuses on IRT Stick and Blade work particularly 6 Count and Trapping Knife Drill! The IRT version is drawn from multiple sources of Filipino Martial Arts but in the end Modern Arnis always plays a big role!
A big thanks goes out to my good friend Rich Parsons who came down for the Meet and Greet and helped me out. Rich is one of the finest Modern Arnis practitioners in the USA or the world for that matter.  Rich teaches Modern Arnis at the Flint Dojo in Flint, Michigan.  Thanks Rich!
Another thank you goes out to Will Deutschendorf for helping me all weekend long.  Will is a Kempo practitioner based out of San Diego and trains and teaches with Bob Rose!  Thanks Will.
Also a big thanks goes out to Terry Stoker and Yolanda Stoker for hosting the event! Twin Dragon Tae Kwon Do really put on a great event!

Defending Empty Handed Against The Blade!

Posted in Uncategorized on April 21, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay so you are caught without a tool in your hand and the person attacking you has a knife.   What do you do?  There currently is a train of thought out there that if someone attacks you with a knife and you are empty handed that you are done for.  This is not something that I subscribe to or would recommend thinking at all.  If you are attacked by someone with a knife the best course of action is always to get out of there as quickly as possible.  If that is not an option then get an equalizer or some sort of tool that possibly could tip the outcome in your favor.  Unfortunately quite often it happens so suddenly that all you may be able to do is defend yourself with your empty hands.  What I always suggest then is to do what you have to do but if you can draw them out.  Meaning get them to really commit to their attack then you could have a shot at a strike to the eyes, throat, limb control, joint manipulation or disarm.  Whatever happens do not give up as many, many people through the course of time have defended themselves against a blade and they have been successful.  Now I do not want to paint a rosy picture as many people have also died while defending themselves against a blade or been badly injured.  Still you have a shot, a chance to succeed in the moment.  The best course of action would be to never have to defend yourself vs. an opponent holding a blade.  Awareness and avoidance skills can definitely help you in this matter.  Cultivate these skills so that you never go down this path.  Still if it does happen then do what you must and survive!

In The Moment It Is All Up To You!
