A Teacher’s Perspective!

     Okay teaching the Martial Sciences is a learned form.  It happens over time and practice.  Initially you will probably not be a very good teacher as it will take you time and teaching repeatedly to breakdown techniques in multiple ways so that different students can get the movement.  However if you persevere over time your skill at teaching will grow and you will be able to break down things easier.  Really it is best to start slowly and have someone monitor your progress.  Then you need to spread your wings and teach unsupervised and understand that you will not be perfect, know all the answers but that you can point people in some directions and with further training with your instructor’s you will be able to gain more insight and then breakdown things even further.  Eventually if you work hard enough at it you will become good.  However, it is just like the physical skill sets of the arts you need to practice, practice and more practice.

     Now when teaching you will be learning as well and that in turn will help your over all training.  When you teach, think through and verbalize what you are doing then you in turn are creating more muscle and memory training for your own technique.  This in turn will help you enter the instinctive response more regularly.

     Sometimes when teaching you may encounter difficulties, ie: someone not learning the material or someone not enjoying training a particular technique.  When someone gets a road block and after you have shown it several ways in general sometimes it is best to move on and revist that technique later.  Not everyone can get what you are doing right off the bat.  Sometimes they will need lot’s of classes in order to get it.  Now if someone does not particularly like doing a certain technique, well sometimes they are just going to have to push through that because if what you are teaching is a fundamental skill there is no avoiding it or they may not have the foundation later for more advanced material. (everything builds off the basics)

     In teaching there are joy’s as it truly is a blast.  However with the good comes the bad and sometimes that can be tough.  Still let your passion fuel you and even when you encounter road blocks move around them and persevere!  In the end that perseverance will allow you to grow, pass on your knowledge and enjoy what you are doing!
