The Watering Down Continues!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 1, 2009 by Brian VanCise

Kerambit in Reverse Grip

…..Okay nothing really get’s my blood boiling more than when someone does not know what they are doing and yet they go out and teach anyways.  This post comes about due to a private lesson I had recently with a new student.  After interviewing the student I knew they had some martial arts training and that they were an instructor in another style.  Great!  I teach a lot of people who at some point want to branch out and learn a great deal more than what their particular style does.  Usually these practitioner’s make up some of my best students in the long run and I really enjoy teaching them.  Well this new student came in and we started talking some more and training.  It became apparent early on that while he had solid striking skills his tool/weapon skills were pretty nonexistent.  However, while talking to him he mentioned that he was now a weapons instructor in a certain martial system.  I was amazed, no floored when he mentioned this. (his skills were simply not there)  He went on to say that he attended a weekend training session and was graded to instructor level after it.  I asked how much it cost and he said a $1000! (holy smokes batman)  I thought to myself that this was money really not well spent and that he had been ripped off.  As we were training he kept mentioning that he was surprised at how hard everything was and that he thought it would be easier based of his previous training.  I took this as a point to mention to him that he did not have the fundamental movement skills that are needed and used with most tool/based systems and that is why it was hard.  We then talked and he showed me quite a bit of what he had been taught during that weekend in the one system where he got his instructorship under them.  The material was so basic and so below skill set levels needed as to be really unusable in my opinion. (it was really, really bad)  Now I have seen quite a few weekend martial courses material and this was the worst ever.  In other words he was ripped off!  Now I am not naming names but this trend of attend a weekend of training and become an instructor is now quickly becoming the norm in the martial/combatives world.  It is a method of empire growing and usually the skill sets taught are watered down and not the best.  Sure they are better than nothing but what happens is that the practitioner/future instructor has no depth and no correlating skill sets to make the material work. (in general as there is always the exception)  What is really going on is that the person or person’s issuing the instructorship are making huge money while creating a following or future revenue stream.  In general they water down the Martial Science that they teach and it is watered down even more as the new weekend instructor goes out to teach.  Now back to my new student.  I do not know if he will continue training or not.  That really is up to him but I do know and he now knows that he needs to refine his skills in order to teach weapons/tools.  That at least is one very good thing that came out of our meeting.

…..To those that are teaching weekend courses where you pass out an instructorship to someone.  Well you should really be ashamed!

Conditioning!

Posted in Uncategorized on June 30, 2009 by Brian VanCise

…..As a martial practitioner you need to be in shape so that you can actually apply your training if needed.  So your martial training will help you get there but you may need more conditioning and that is where other forms of training come in.  Everyone knows I am big on kettle bells and manage to bike almost every day. (weather permitting)  Beyond that I do a lot of body calisthenics such as push ups, sit ups, free squats.  I am also a lover of swimming, hiking, running, mountain climbing and more.  So I try to have a varied work out routine that is fun and yet keeps my body fit.  Diet is another thing you need to worry about to have optimal performance.  Good nutrition with protein will help you perform at a high level.  I love chicken and if you have a outdoor grill or a George Foreman grill then you can really have some delicious meals.  Good nutrition can help with your conditioning by giving your body the fuels it needs to perform at a peak level.  Last night was cajun chicken off the George Foreman grill with some corn and cranberries. (it was delicious)  Today I will be hitting my conditioning pretty hard with 2 kettle bells doing a military press continuously until muscle exhaustion.  Followed by shoulder presses, sit ups and  a cardiovascular 3,4,6 & 10 count workout.  To many people do not maintain a level of fitness and that is some thing that is vital to being able to protect yourself or your loved ones.

Here is a video clip of a one hand clean and jerk that goes on and on. (good strength and fitness)

The above person is also a serious martial artist

Knife Grappling Video Clip!

…..The following clip shows one group addressing a blade on the ground.  I think this is important as if you are taken to the ground what if the other individual pulls out a knife.  You need to have a plan or idea of what you are doing then.

What Is A 21st Century Warrior?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on June 28, 2009 by Brian VanCise

Firearm Effect

…..Here is an article I wrote in the fall of 2006 for the original newsletter The Instinctive Edge.  This was a newsletter distributed only to IRT practitioner’s.  The following article represents a certain viewpoint on warriorship which I feel is pretty correct.  It is inclusionary and not exclusionary.  It opens the door for many people to be warriors and yet it excludes those that are not willing to sacrifice, serve and help other people.  Through out my life I have met many warriors.  Heck I just had dinner with a friend of mine last night who is a former Marine Recon and the day before I had lunch with a good friend who is a police sergeant. (both of them are warriors in their own right)  I have also met warriors in less traditional warrior paths.  These are people who really laid it all on the line for someone else.  I have also met people who are in classically thought of warrior positions and yet they are not warriors nor have they ever demonstrated warriorship skills or heart.  They are in a position but they simply do not have it. (that warrior mentality, skill or heart)  It would be unwise to count on them for anything. (I know of a local LEO just like this)       I do not bandy about the warrior idea very easily nor would I assign it to someone on a whim.  I think people in many ways have it or they do not.

Beginning of Article!

…..What is a 21st Century Warrior? Well in my opinion it is anyone who protects, serves and represents their community.  This could be Military personnel, Police, Fire Fighters, Corrections, Security, Medical Emergency services and of course you the everyday citizen.  Everyone that is in a position to help, serve and take care of someone and who trains in warrior based arts is a warrior in the 21st century.  Warriorship  Comes with a lot of duties though.  You have to think above and beyond yourself

…..Whether it is taking care of your family, relatives, friends, etc.  Warrior’s do more than think about just themselves.  They think and find ways to protect their loved ones and also everyone around them.  Warriors are people that I like to be around because I know if I encounter a problem that they will be there to help me through it.  Warriorship means that you are going to go above and beyond the call and that you will take those extra steps to help influence in a positive manner those within your immediate influence.  That is one of the reasons why I enjoy teaching the martial science traditions.  I see people get to a point where they feel effective in their skills and they in turn help other people to grow and develop these same life affirming abilities.  A former Marine and Budo Taijutsu Practitioner summed this idea up nicely.

Wherever I go everyone is a little safer because I am there.

Wherever I am everyone in need has a friend.

Whenever I return home, everyone is happy I am there.

“It’s a better Life!”

…..Warriorship takes on many different aspects and understanding the responsibilities of it is essential.  If you train in IRT then you are training to protect yourself, your loved ones and other people who you may not have even met yet.  It is a great responsibility and one that I feel confident that all of our IRT members can live up to.  In IRT we are striving to be everything that we can become and also learning to  protect ourselves and our loved ones.  Learn these martial science skills well.  So that if you ever need them they will be there for you.

…..To all the warriors who have gone before I salute you and to all the future warriors I am looking forward to meeting you someday.

End of article!

…..Now I am not naive enough to think that everyone who trains in IRT is a warrior as certainly some people do not have the mentality or heart for it yet.  However, they may grow into becoming a warrior and be some one that protects, serves and goes above and beyond for other people.  They may also lay it on the line for someone else down the road.  Having been in a few of those situations I can say with confidence that either you will help someone out or you probably won’t.  I have witnessed people and been there myself on the side of helping and also I have seen people retreat and go the other direction.  In many ways you simply do not know where some one falls until a moment in time where some thing happens and they respond!  That is when they can fall into a classificatin of a 21st Century Warrior!

Achievement!

Posted in Uncategorized on June 27, 2009 by Brian VanCise

website-angled-elbow

…..So last night I watched and coached two practitioner’s to a new level in IRT!  It was a long night filled with skill set demonstration’s, teaching and of course some grappling, full contact empty hand and stick sparring.  Each practitioner performed very well over the two hours and forty five minutes of the test.  So they both should be very proud in their achievement! Achieving skill in the Martial Sciences is some thing that takes time and of course dedication.  It just does not happen over night.  Constant work and training and growth need to occur.  One has to constantly analyze their weak points and then work on those weaknesses so that they diminish.  Since we do not hand out advancement in IRT very quickly or without the person having the skill set needed for their advancement usually people who are not serious weed themselves out in that first year or two.  That leaves the dedicated ones to continue on and achieve their goals.  Dedication is essential as it is some times easy to just stop training or post pone training.  Long term dedication takes work and also a responsibility to yourself that you want these skill sets.  Those that are dedicated and willing to take the time will achieve in the Martial Sciences.

Ahhh The Smell Of Battle!

Posted in Uncategorized on June 25, 2009 by Brian VanCise

woodchuck

…..So we have the cutest little thing living under the porch.  Yes a wood chuck or ground hog has moved in.  Not just at my house but also under the neighbor’s house.  The neighbor no longer lives there so they are completely unaware of the situation.  Really these pests which are related to the squirrel are probably the cutest things you will see.  Except that after their cuteness wears off and you realize that they burrow and cause damage then you know you need to take control of the situation.  So I find myself preparing by getting a live trap and I will bait the trap and capture it for relocation.  Wood Chucks carry rabies so it will be imperative not to be bit but to relocate and move the critter over ten miles away.  Needless to say if this does not work then I will utilize the drive out method a friend of mine uses.  Fire crackers thrown into the hole.  This method apparently works great as well.  Still having the neighbor’s house also infested I think that a live trap and relocation is the best idea.  After wards I will fill in the holes and place some coyote urine in the area to ward off other pests.  So battle is in the air. Now how does this apply to Martial Science training.  Well it all comes down to knowing the opposition and how to tactically gain the advantage.  In this case I know what I am up against and what he likes to eat. (ie. green leaves, broccoli, apples, etc.  He is a vegetarian after all)  Next I have formulated a plan to take care of the problem.  Finally their will be the execution of the plan and obviously minor changes as needed.  So it relates to Martial Science training as you plan, prepare and execute your tactics.  Wish me luck and expect some pictures not to soon with our furry little friend.
