A Simple Four Count Drill From Arnis, Eskrima and Kali!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 15, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay we have been working the Filipino Martial Art four count twirling technique.  This is a pretty old and rudimentary technique.  Personally I enjoy doing it quite a bit and as usual I try to come up with all kinds of variations.   The technique we are doing is pretty similar to the following video clip.  This clip features Jonathon Broster of Rapid Arnis International one of Britain’s largest Filipino groups.  I have alot of respect for the guy’s and gal’s of Rapid Arnis.  They train hard and have skills!

Enjoy!

IRT Rapid Fire Demonstration!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 14, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay having the ability to take out your handgun and rapidly shoot until a threat is stopped is an essential firearm self defense skill.  The rapid fire approach that I use is simply a point shooting method where I point my finger at what I wish to shoot and then unload a magazine.  If more was needed I would drop the magazine in the handgun and insert another one.  Of course the goal of any personal protection skill set with a firearm is to neutralize the threat that is coming at you.  You also have to have a justifiable reason to use lethal force.  I would always advise consulting an attorney in your area that is familiar with this segment of the law so that you have a clear picture of what you can and cannot do to defend yourself or your loved ones with reasonable force under the circumstances.  When using the Rapid Fire approach you are attempting to neutralize the incoming attacker who has upped the self defense situation to a lethal force action.  With Rapid Fire you unload until the thread is neutralized.

In the following video I show a close range rapid fire technique from a draw on my strong side.  In this particular clip I unload a full magazine of 15 shots from a Glock 22, 40 caliber.  Rapid fire training is an essential skill in a persons handgun defensive skill set.  Currently it is taught all over the country and when I just went through the NRA CPL course here in Michigan they covered it as well.  Previously I have covered it during training many times including when going through the police academy.  The goal of the Rapid Fire Shooting is to unload the gun and place as many shots around the torso area but not necessarily in too tight of a pattern.  In other words you are trying to spread around the pattern.  All firearm training can be inherently dangerous so please seek qualified instruction when training.  This video is for demonstration purposes only.

Enjoy the video!

BJ Penn and Jiujitsu!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 13, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Well if you follow MMA or Brazilian Jiujitsu you would know that BJ Penn is one of if not the smoothest grappler’s out there.  He has great technical skill and the flexibility to really make things work.  Following are some video clips where he is either teaching or training.

Brazilian Jiujitsu is a core component in combative grappling and something that any serious Martial Science practitioner will have to train in.  The movement is simply extraordinary!  Add in some weapons training while grappling and you are really talking what I love!

Enjoy!

Note I do not endorse any particular fighter’s out there but the training methods can and are a skill set that could help protect you in the moment!

Kali Gear Fighter Bag Review!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 12, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Okay I am always out and about and teaching private or semi private lessons outside.  So for years I have either carted around things in a duffel bag or simply carried them individually.  So recently I wised up and while perusing a site I noticed a gear bag that probably would do the trick.

The site in question is Kali Gear: http://www.kaligear.com/catalog/index.php

Here is the direct link to the Fighter Bag: http://kaligear.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=72

The gear bag that I am reviewing here is the Fighter Bag.  Okay, so I ordered one and it arrived and I must say I am impressed with the workmanship and apparent durability.  Even better I was able to stuff in the bag without cramping it.  Two wood bolos, one aluminum bolo, my wallet, kerambit trainer, four rubber training knives, two wood training knives and two sticks.  All that with still a little room left over. (just a little)  After everything was in it you can fold it up so that it really does not take up to much space.

Here are some pictures:

All in all I am very happy with this gear bag and it suits my purposes for a training bag geared towards teaching one or two people. :)

See You Out There In The World!

Hardships!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 11, 2008 by Brian VanCise

No matter where you are at in your training and in general in your life you will always come across some hardships.  It could be monetarily, family, Instructor or student issues or simply so many more issues that could develop into a hardship.  Truthfully how you deal with these hardships is what is important.  When confronted with something that is hard or difficult I try to figure out a way to turn it into a positive.  Throughout my life this has served me very well even through some difficult and trying times.  Any advice I give here will always change depending on the hardship but several things are generally true in how I deal with something.

First I contemplate about what is going on.

Secondly I look for a solution to the problem and a way to implement the solution.

Thirdly I implement the solution and then see if it works.

Fourth if everything works then I move on in a positive manner!  If not then I start contemplating all over again on how to effectively deal with the hardship and turn it into a positive!

Now that last little bit is essential in that I try to turn everything into a positive experience!  Sometimes it may end up absolutely a great experience in the end and at other times it might just be a learning experience.  Still in general I am a positive individual and look to continue on in that manner!  So taking a hardship and contemplating about it, then implementing a solution and moving on in a positive manner works very well for me!

Everyone is different so what works for me may not work for you but you will never know if you do not try!  Next time you are confronted with a hardship or any difficulty find a way to turn it into a positive!

Positive Minds Make For Strong Minds!  Embrace The Positive!

Diving Right In!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 10, 2008 by Brian VanCise

The other day I was in a conversation with a good friend of mine who just happens to be one of the greatest martial artists in the world at this time.  His skill is simply without question.  Still when we talk we always have interesting conversations regarding our training, teaching and research.  We are simply without a doubt martial practitioners that are interested in improving and seeing what possibilities are out there.  So we are always on the look out for the little things in what we do and what others do.  The other day my friend said, “How are you keeping everything fresh lately?”  I thought and then responded with I am Diving Right In!  So what is Diving Right In?  Well, in just a few words it simply means that I am just doing!  Whether I am teaching, training or practicing under another watchful instructors eye I am diving into the lesson, training and letting it unfold!  In other words I am just letting it happen and doing it in the moment and afterwards then I will decipher it!  That is Diving Right In!  Sometimes we can over think to much and that is good but at other times we just need to do what we are doing without thought and just live in the moment!  Then when we have some quiet time you can reflect and see what and where you went and make the mental notes to replicate if needed!

After I said that my friend said, “I guess I am diving right in too!” :)   Then he said, “I try to think of myself as a new student always and catch the wonder that is the martial arts.”  One thing that I feel is absolutely true is that having good friends to share your martial experiences with is a must.

So What Is Stopping You?  Dive Right In And Catch The Wonder That Is The Martial Arts!

Soke Massaki Hatsumi’s Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 9, 2008 by Brian VanCise

Hatsumi Sensei truly is a unique and fascinating Martial Science practitioner!  Clearly he is one of the finest martial artists ever and is creating technically advanced practitioner’s regularly through his teachings!  If you have the opportunity to train with him then do so!  His martial system of Budo Taijutsu is truly unique and a one of a kind system.  With nine distinct Japanese Ryu-ha within it you have a never ending martial world to explore.  One of the things I like best is the adaptability and variation within Budo Taijutsu.  It also helps that it is a tool based system. :)

Following are some different clips that I thought you might enjoy:

Skill Development!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 7, 2008 by Brian VanCise

One thing that is essential in your practicing of Martial Science is that you continually work on your own skill development.  Technical training is essential in that you need to constantly look at how your are doing certain techniques, training, etc. and slowly introduce different factors that will enhance your skill set.  This is a never ending journey and if you think you have arrived then you need to reevaluate your training and refocus on improving your skill sets.  Every practitioner needs to work on technical skill development as it is a never ending task.  When training with a teacher you will generally be shown little things to improve your skill set.  Take those little things to heart and you will make progress.  Maybe after class write down quickly the little details so that you remember how to enhance your skill set training in the future.  As a teacher/Guro/instructor or whatever name you wish to call it I regularly when teaching will do something just to work my skill set.  Say I am working a certain drill or technique with another practitioner I might do something slightly different just for myself.  I might then stop and explain what I did and then back we go to the training.  So even if you are teaching you can work in variations on skill sets just for you and guess what everyone benefits!  When training with various instructors that I bring in for seminars I am constantly on the lookout for the little details that they use to be successful.  Usually I find something that really piques my interest and then I practice it and add the skill.  Your training is a never ending journey of practicing different skill sets and improving your technique.  Never stop and always know that you can improve and learn!
